Dubus's book, Townie, has sent me back to his father's work, which is masterful. Still strikes me as ironic that the keen insights the elder Dubus has into his characters didn't always translate to any better understanding of his own family. At least not until the last few years of his life, when he seems to have more than made up for his failings.
